Tucked away in the hills just outside San Ignacio lies Che Chem Ha Cave, one of Belize’s most fascinating and culturally rich underground sites. This tour is ideal for travelers seeking a mix of hiking, archaeology, and adventure—without the intensity of more extreme cave tours like ATM.
The experience begins with a 40-minute drive from Villa Massis to a privately-owned farm, followed by a 30-minute uphill hike through jungle-covered terrain. As you ascend, your guide will share stories of the cave’s discovery in the 1980s by a local farmer who stumbled upon ancient Maya pottery tucked deep within its chambers.
Once inside the cave, you’ll climb ladders and explore dry caverns adorned with original Maya artifacts—over two dozen storage vessels still resting where they were placed over 1,000 years ago. These pottery pieces were used for offerings and possibly storing sacred substances. Unlike other caves, Che Chem Ha is entirely dry, and its chambers are narrow and intimate, allowing you to closely observe the ceremonial spaces and feel the spiritual energy still lingering in the air.
This is one of the few places where you can see undisturbed artifacts in their original context, untouched and respectfully preserved.
