For the truly adventurous, few experiences compare to the ATM Cave—short for Actun Tunichil Muknal, meaning “Cave of the Stone Sepulchre.” This is one of Belize’s most thrilling and culturally significant tours, offering a physical and spiritual journey into the heart of the ancient Maya underworld, or Xibalba.
Located in the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve and about 1.5 hours from Villa Massis, the ATM Cave is a living museum of Maya history. Your tour begins with a 45-minute jungle hike, crossing rivers and scenic rainforest trails. Once at the cave entrance, you’ll swim across a cool, clear pool and begin your guided trek into the cave system.
Inside, you’ll navigate waist-deep waters, climb over limestone boulders, and squeeze through narrow passageways. Your expert guide will lead you deeper into the chambers where Maya priests once performed rituals. You’ll see hundreds of ancient pottery shards, tools, and ceremonial items left in place, exactly as they were discovered.
At the end of the cave, you’ll reach the final chamber—home to the Crystal Maiden, the fully intact, calcified skeleton of a young Maya sacrifice victim, sparkling from centuries of mineral deposits.
