Xunantunich Maya Ruins Tour

Step into the ancient world of the Maya with a guided tour of Xunantunich, one of Belize’s most iconic archaeological sites. Just 30 minutes from Villa Massis, Xunantunich—pronounced “Shoo-nan-too-nitch”—means “Stone Woman” in Maya and is named after a ghostly figure said to appear at the site. This tour is perfect for history buffs, adventure seekers, and anyone fascinated by ancient civilizations.

The adventure begins with a short drive followed by a hand-cranked ferry ride across the Mopan River, a unique experience in itself. From there, it’s a short uphill walk to the heart of the site. Towering above the jungle canopy is El Castillo, the second tallest Maya structure in Belize. Climb to the top for panoramic views of the surrounding forest and even into neighboring Guatemala on a clear day.

Your expert guide will share the stories carved into stone friezes, explain the site’s astronomical alignments, and paint a vivid picture of daily life in this once-thriving ceremonial center. With plazas, ball courts, and temples to explore, Xunantunich is both a cultural and visual feast.

Light, breathable clothing, comfortable walking shoes or hiking sandals, and a hat or cap. Expect warm and sunny weather.
Sunscreen, insect repellent, camera or smartphone, water bottle, and cash for souvenirs or local crafts sold near the entrance.
Departs Villa Massis at 8:30 AM and returns around 12:30 PM. Duration is approximately 4 hours.
